What is Dandruff or Seborrhoea Dermatitis?

It is a skin disorder of scalp when skin cells are shed off at a fast pace.

During our lifetime, almost all of us suffer from dandruff. In general, we shed dead skin cells off approximately every 28 days. Dandruff occurs when the skin cells are shed off at an accelerated rate even before they are dead. These cells appear as itchy white flakes on a dry scalp, or as waxy scales on an oily scalp. The areas that may get affected are: scalp, face, nose, eyebrows, and ears.

What causes Dandruff?

A fungus called Pityrosporum ovale (P. ovale) lives on our body including scalp. When this fungus gets out of control, it leads to dandruff. Oily scalp supports the growth of P. ovale. The other factors include diet, hormonal changes, weather (specially the winter), and use of hair-care products.

There is no known cure for dandruff.

Ketoconazole is the only ingredient found to be effective against the growth of P. ovale. This is marketed as Nizoral in a shampoo form.

How to Manage Dandruff?

Cleanse your hair and scalp. Choose a cleanser that will loosen the scales and wash them away. New batch of flakes are regenerated every three days. You can manage the growth through proper cleansing, every third or fourth day. Make a schedule to cleanse your hair twice a week, for example every Sunday and every Thursday.

Brush your hair. This will increase the blood circulation as well as loosen more scales.

Massage the scalp with finger tips.

Do not use harsh shampoos. Harsh shampoos cause sebaceous glands to react by producing more oil.

Cleansing Bases (Fenugreek Seeds, Mung Dal, Beets)

Dandruff Cleanser (Yogurt Lemon)

You can prepare cleansers that may be worked in to scalp with your finger to break loose the flakes.

Soak whole Fenugreek seeds overnight in water. Make a paste, apply for 30 minutes.

Mix fine powder of Moong beans and yogurt. Make a paste, apply for 30 minutes

Beets can be ground to a paste and applied for 30 minutes.

Vinegar

Prepare a solution of vinegar and water (3 parts water to each part of vinegar). Work the solution into your scalp with fingers. Wear a shower cap to cover your hair and go to bed. In the morning, apply the solution again. Work up the scalp with finger tip to break loose the flakes gently. Wash and rinse with plain water.

Shampoo Shikakai, Reetha

Use mild shampoo. Harsh shampoos only promote more oil production. Shikakai is an organic pH balanced powder sold in the stores. You can use either Reetha or Shikakai, or a combination of both.

Add-in Ingredients for cleansers or shampoos

Sulfur

Sulfur helps with cleansing. Sources of sulfur include: Egg yolks, hot red peppers, Horseradish, Radishes, Mustard greens, Mustard Seeds, Onions, and Garlic.

Wash your hair once a week with sulfur based soap. Avoid hair products that contain alcohol which dries out the scalp.

Exfoliating agents Lime, Yogurt, Cider vinegar

Helps dissolve the gummy stuff that hold the scales stuck to the scalp.

Amla

Amla is normally added to Shampoo. It is the best source of Vitamin C. It also helps as a natural dye compatible with the color of Indian hair.

Diet

Eat a diet rich in B vitamins, especially Vitamin B6

Avoid allergens such as: Chocolates, Peanuts, and Shellfish

Foods high in sulfur (Eggs, Onions, and Mustard Greens)

Foods high in omega 3 acids (Fish, Walnuts, Pistachios, Flaxseeds)

How to make Dandruff Cleanser (Yogurt Lemon)

This paste is made of ground Moong beans, yogurt, mustard powder and lemon juice to help cleans dandruff off the scalp.

Ingredients

Moong Dal Powder (Ground Mung Beans): 3 Tablespoon

Plain yogurt: 1 Cup

Mustard Powder: 1 Tablespoon

Lemon Juice: 2 teaspoons

Process and Store

Mix all the ingredients together to form a paste to the consistency of a batter. Let it rest at room temperature for 20 minutes and store in the refrigerator.

How to Use

1. Stir the batter then use 2 to 3 Tablespoons of batter to apply to the scalp. Work the batter in to the scalp with the tips of your fingers.

2. Wait 30 minutes. Work the batter again with your fingers into the scalp.

3. Wash off with Luke warm water.

Shampoo is a liquid soap with added colorants, fragrant, nutrients and essential oils.

First make the liquid soap. It may be Castile or natural. Add the colorants and nutrients. Choose non-reactive utensils such as stainless steel, glass, or plastic. These are the different shampoo recipes:

Castile Herbal Shampoo Recipe

Shikakai Herbal Shampoo Recipe

Herbal Shampoo Ingredients

Soap

In the western world, fats and lye have been mixed together for centuries to make soap. Animal fats (lard) were common to make cheap soaps. Soap with Olive oil and lye is called Castile. One should be careful making soap at home. Lye can cause severe burns if not handled properly. Castile soaps (as a solid bar, or liquid, scented or unscented) are available at health food stores in United States.

In early 1950s, ‘Sunlight’ was a common commercial soap sold in India. At the same time, Desi soap was made with cotton seed oil and caustic soda. Desi soap was harsh and normally used to launder clothes.

Shikakai, and Reetha contain Saponin, a natural soap. Reetha has been used over centuries to launder woollen clothes and silk clothes. Shikakai has been used to wash hair. Reetha produces more lather than Shikakai. For Shampoo, a combination of Reetha and Shikakai is used.

Sulfur

You will notice sulfur as one of the ingredients in most of the commercial shampoos in United States. It makes the shampoo anti-bacterial and it also helps in cleaning scalp.

In India, Neem oil and Mustard oil are commonly used.

Colorant and Fragrant

Colorant and fragrance should match. The basic purpose of colorant is not to dye your hair. It is just the color of the shampoo itself. For example, you may add yellow color and lemon oil to make a lemon shampoo.

Colorants can be made to give fragrance, and add many antioxidants at the same time. For herbal shampoo, you may make a colorant out of one or more of these products: Amla powder, Broken Cinnamon sticks, Broken Cloves, Black tea leaves, Gotu Kola powder, henna powder.

Henna lets you retain some of the color as a dye. Gotu Kola is also called Brahmi, a popular ingredient to promote blood circulation in the scalp. Gotu Kola also has a small amount of Saponin. Gotu Kola powder may not be readily available in Indian Stores in United States; you may be able to buy Gotu Kola extract.

Nutrients

Amla and Gotu Kola are common nutrients added to make Herbal shampoos in India. Amla adds a large amount of Vitamin C, and Gotu Kola is believed to increase the scalp blood circulation. Nutrients are added as Basic oils, essential oils, extracts, or derived at home from powders or leaves. Common nutrients in general are:

Amla powder………………………….. Vitamin C

Black tea leaves………………………. Antioxidant you may substitute with Green tea

Gotu Kola Extract (Brahmi)……… Antibiotic, promotes blood circulation.

Neem Oil……………………………….. Antibacterial agent to create so called ‘medicated shampoo’

Wheat-germ oil………………………. Vitamin E softens hair

Sweet Almond oil…………………… Vitamin E softens hair

Grape seed oil………………………… Omega 3 fatty acids

Fractionated coconut oil…………… Softens hair

Glycerine…………………………………. Moisturizer

Honey……………………………………. Moisturizer

Jaggery………………………………….. Moisturizer

Essential Oils

The essential oils are added to seek a specific therapeutic value, or just for fragrance. You can add 10 drops of essential oil to a cup of liquid Castile soap or Natural Shikakai soap to make a quick herbal or floral shampoo. After adding the essential oil, let the shampoo age for about two days so that essential oil is well absorbed.

One of my favourites is to add 5 drops of Chameli (Jasmine) essential oil to half a cup of Baby Shampoo.

Coriander

Champa

Lavender

Rose hips

Rose petals

You may be able to influence thinning of hair by changes in your diet and applying a topical paste made of Fenugreek seeds.

Male baldness is tied with testosterone levels during puberty and your genes. This appears as thinning hair among women. We can do very little about hair loss due to genetic makeup.

Hair has three stages: Growth phase (3 to 6 years), Transitional phase (2-3 weeks), and Resting phase (3 months). At the end of resting phase, the hair sheds off, and new growth phase starts to replace the lost hair. If the hair lost is more than the replacement hair, it will result in thinning of hair or baldness.

The new growth phase can be slowed down by malnutrition so that not enough hair is produced. At the end of resting phase, more hair may be shed due to hormonal changes. Hair may also be lost due to medications.

Poor diet can influence hair thinning. Avoid saturated fats and meats. Increase foods intake that are high in such as Vitamin A, B Vitamins (Specially Biotin), Silica, Calcium, Iron and Zinc. Drink plenty of water to hydrate scalp.

Home Remedy

Studies have shown Fenugreek seeds to be very effective.

Boil two Tablespoon of Fenugreek Seeds in ½ cup of water. Let it steep at low temperature for 10 minutes. Let it cool to room temperature.

Grind the Fenugreek seeds with the boiled water in a mortar pestle or any electric grinder. Make a fine loose paste. You can store the Fenugreek paste in your refrigerator for two weeks.

Apply and massage the Fenugreek paste in to your scalp for two minutes. Let it stay 20 minutes. Wash and Rinse.

Apply two times a day.

After one week you will see a drop in number of hair lost.

Hair growth tonic Recipe

Topical recipe helps cleanse scalp, strengthens hair, promote new hair growth, and stop hair-loss.

Prepare a large batch by doubling or quadrupling the ingredients and store them in the refrigerator. This has a consistency of smooth paste. Apply to your scalp, from nape to hairline. After applying the paste, wear a shower cap. Preferably, keep it on through the whole night. In the morning, work the scalp again with your fingers, then wash and rinse your hair with plain water till the water runs clean.

There can be any number of reasons why someone would chose to the use of hair extensions: to alter their physical appearance, for self confidence, for a radical statement, or because their own hair has thinned or fallen out. A hair weave is a very general term which is commonly used when referring to human or artificial hair, which is used to alter one’s natural hair. This process is done by adding additional hair to one’s natural hair or by covering the natural hair completely with human or synthetic hair pieces. There are also numerous benefits to having a hair weave or extensions: they can be used to help lengthen shorter hair, to add volume and thickness to thinning and fine hair, to alter one’s hair without adding harsh chemicals or additives to their own, and to set new fashion trends.

What is Indian Hair Remy?

Indian Remy hair is arguable one of the most popular and sought after types of hair extensions. One of the reasons why Indian Hair Remy is so popular is because there are so many advantages to using this product.
There are many unique advantages to Indian hair: it is both simultaneously very strong and also thin – allowing it to me manipulated more easily and transformed into various hair styles. The hair which is donated and comprises Indian Remy Hair more often than not, comes most often from people who have have voluntarily shaved their heads for religious beliefs and purposes. This routine usually takes place in Tirupati, India. Indian hair is more often than not available in more than one choice: both as Remy Virgin hair or simply as Remy hair. If you are interested in obtaining hair extensions for yourself or someone else you know, you should be aware that the highest quality extension hair is Indian human Remy hair. One of the great advantages to using Indian Remy hair is that it still possesses the cuticle layer. The cuticle layer is one of the most important aspects of hair and what gives hair its shine and glow. The cuticle layer is the outermost part of each hair strand and is has been said to bare the resemblance to shingles on a roof when looked at under a microscope. It is important to note, that all Indian Remy hair makes sure to have the, all important, cuticle layer of the donated hair flowing in the same direction, which is the way it should be flowing naturally and as it was created. The cuticle layer is also highly important in regards to how much the hair will tangle and become frizzy, as well as the longevity and lifespan of the hair extensions.

Helpful Fact and Tips about Indian Hair

Choosing the right make of hair extensions can be a daunting task and overwhelm a lot of people. It is important to note, in today’s market there are a lot of suppliers who claim they have the highest quality products available and even more important of, as the consumer, to know what you should be looking for before you decide what product to purchase.

Many suppliers today claim to have “virgin”, “real”, “premium Remy ” or “full cuticle” Indian hair. The fact of the matter is, sadly, most suppliers are providing their customers with Chinese or blended animal hair that has been processed and is not top of the line quality. A lot of suppliers even go as far as to chemically treat, texture and process their hair, and then proceed to sell it as “naturally” textured.

There are a lot of terms which often float around regarding Indian hair and unless you are familiar with the terms, you may as well be hearing another language. Some of the terms which you should become familiar with are “Remy” and “Full Cuticle.” “Remy” or “Full Cuticle Hair” means the hair has very health cuticle. The cuticles are intact and all of them are flowing in the same direction from the root of the hair to the tip of the hair. You will find hair is typically of “Remy” quality when it has been collected directly from a woman’s head and has been cut while held in a ponytail, so none of the hair strands fall to the floor. Due to the great care which is involved in the “Remy” collection process, only “Remy” hair can guarantee all of the hair cuticles will stay aligned and the hair will be more manageable and have far less tangles in it – if any at all. True “Remy” hair lasts for a long time and can be reused over and over again. “Remy” hair can also be colored, ironed, flat ironed, and even curled, just as if it were your very own hair.

Every woman dreams of having healthy, long, strong, flowing hair. In some cultures, having long flowing hair is a requirement and can also be very symbolic. If you, like many other women, are looking for hair care tips, style and trends, you have come to the right place. Below is some must read advice on how to strengthen, cleanse and care for your hair and to ensure you are the envy of women everywhere.

Indian Hair Care Tips:

First and foremost, make sure to try and always comb your hair as gently as possible. This will help to ensure less hair is broken and traumatized while brushing or combing.

It is also very important to note that your hair is at its weakest point and most vulnerable when it is wet. It is important to try and brush your hair as little as possible when it is wet. This tip will help ensure your hair stays strong and will also prevent a lot of breakage and split ends.

Braiding is a very important tip regarding Indian hair care. By braiding your hair, it will help to ensure your hair is protected from damage. Another great thing about braiding your hair, is it shows off the length of your hair, so others can truly admire it.

If you are one of the many people who suffer from dry scalp and dandruff, you should be sure to try combining a mixture of plain yogurt with shredded coconut. Leave this combination in your hair for ten to fifteen minutes and then wash out with your regular shampoo. After a few treatments of this, your scalp will be more moist and you will find you no longer have a dry scalp and will no longer suffer from dandruff.

To relax your scalp and hair, try massaging your entire scalp with a warm oil, then braid your hair and leave it to rest overnight. If your hair appears greasy in the morning you can follow this treatment up with a simple shampoo, but it is important to note, not all hair will appear greasy and most hair will appear more shiny and refreshed.

Ban certain devices from your house such as: blow dryers, curling irons, and flat irons. These have been proven time and time again to further damage and destroy your hair. By using these items your hair will appear more brittle and will start to break off. When at all possible, try to let your hair dry as naturally as possible and avoid using outside sources and devices to dry your hair.

Like almost everything other aspect of beauty, healthy Indian Hair will begin with your body and diet. If you want healthy hair, try to change your diet by adding a wide variety of leafy green vegetables and fresh fruit. Dairy products such as low fat yogurts and low fat mils will also help strength and nourish your hair. A great super food is fresh coconut, so try to use this whenever possible. Coconut oil has also been a great proven method of helping maintain and regain hair health. By massaging your hair with coconut oil, leaving it in for approximately ten to fifteen minutes, and then rinsing out, your hair will regain a new strength and vibrancy.

The color of your hair depends on the presence or absence of Melanin in the cortex layer of the hair. The absence of Melanin results in white/gray hair. Melanin is produced by the cells called Melanocytes. These cells are located in the hair follicles. There are two forms of Melanin: Eumelanin, and Pheomelanin. All human hair has Pheomelanin, the red pigment. The Eumelanin is the black pigment. Higher the amount of Eumelanin, the darker is the hair color.

The amount of Pheomelanin is more stable than Eumelanin. If we bleach hair, the Eumelanin goes away first, leaving the hair as red due to Pheomelanin. Further, bleaching bleaches the Pheomelanin making the hair go orange and eventually yellow. The natural color of the protein that makes the hair is actually yellow.

The melanin varies for different part of the body. You may have different color eye brows, beard, private part, and head.

Turning gray with age

As we age, the Melanocytes produce less and less melanin. Eventually no melanin is produced; the absence of melanin turns hair white or gray. The process is highly dependent on our genes.

There is no known diet or a supplement that can reverse or even slow down this process of greying. The greying takes over a decade. In the mean time, we buy all the hair tonics that claim to slow down the process.

In India, the most common tonic ingredient for greying hair is Amla.

During a study of a new cancer dug for Leukemia, French scientists have observed restoration of melanin production as a side effect. It is still at a very early stage of development.

Premature Gray

Werner syndrome and Pernicious Anaemia may cause premature greying. This is reversible after the patient has recovered.

Malnutrition can cause the hair to turn lighter, thinner, and brittle. The hair color may turn reddish brown due to poor production of melanin. This can be reversed with correction in food intake.

Some interesting facts

A recent study demonstrated that people 50-70 years of age with dark eyebrows but grey hair are significantly more likely to have type II diabetes than those with both grey eyebrows and grey hair.

Some Interesting Claims

In India, most of the anti-greying concoctions use Amla. Amla is high in Vitamin C. When dried, Amla powder is soaked in water, the water turn black. When this Amla water is applied to hair, it sorts of acts like a dye.

There is no scientific evidence to suggest that Amla effects melanin production in any manner. Similar claims are made about Curry Leaves, Almond oil, and Brahmi Oil. None of these items affect the melanin.

Hair Dyes in India

In India, Henna (Mehndi), and Indigo (Neel) have been used to dye hair for centuries. Lemon juice and Chamomile tea are used to lighten hair. These colorants deposit color on the exterior of the hair with minimum loss to the basic hair structure.

When the sebaceous oil glands produce little or no oil, the hair looks dry. Sometimes, it is a result of chemical treatment. It could also be a result of poor diet. The hair lacks shine, looks dull, feels rough to the touch, may be thin and brittle, and may have split ends and tangles easily. The dry hair is hard to manage.

There are two phases to washing dry hair. During the first phase, shampoo is applied to cleanse the scalp of the oil and remove the dirt stuck to the hair shaft. During first phase, the emphasis is on the scalp. During the second phase, you will need to apply the hair conditioner to the hair shaft and the scalp. During second phase, the emphasis is on the hair shaft.

Short hair may be washed every other day. Long dry hair may be washed every fourth day. (Three days in between hair wash).

Do not wash too frequently, it further reduces oil. The dry hair needs nutrition and moisturizer.

Phase I

Use Warm water, and shampoo for dry hair. You may create your own cleanser by mixing yogurt, honey.

Wet your hair with warm water

Apply cleanser to the scalp, the nape, and hairline. Use fingers to spread it around the entire scalp. Let it sit 2 minutes.

Wash away the cleanser with warm water.

Re-apply cleanser to the scalp area as well as the hair. Leave the cleanser on for about 5 minutes.

Wash away all the cleanser with warm water, till water runs clear.

Yogurt Honey Cleanser

Dahi (Indian word for Yogurt): ¾ cup

Honey: 2 Tablespoons

Fresh Lime juice: 1 teaspoon

Yogurt exfoliates the scalp. Honey exfoliates and moisturizes. Lime juice cuts oil or grime. Do NOT add to much lime juice, it will dry out your scalp and even lighten your hair.

Phase II

Use cold water, and hair conditioner suitable to meet your hair needs.

Squeeze out as much water as possible by hand.

Apply hair conditioner. Make sure that hair conditioner covers the hair from root to the end of the shaft.

Cover your hair with a shower cap. Wait about 5 to 10 minutes. Time depends on the type of hair conditioner.

Wash away all the hair conditioner with cold water, till water runs clear.

Do NOT use any hair conditioners with astringents

Easy Hair Conditioner

Aloe Vera: 1 Tablespoon
Honey: 1 teaspoon
Almond oil: 1 teaspoon
Coconut oil: 1 Tablespoon

Dry Hair treatments

Treatments are applied overnight.

In the olden days, Mustard oil and Coconut oils were used to massage the scalp. Both these oils are high in omega 3 fatty acids and do help nourish the hair. Mustard oil is high in sulfur. Sulfur dries out the scalp in the long run and should not be used on dry hair. A combination of coconut oil and almond oil is more suitable. Almond oil provides Vitamin E, and Coconut oil provides omega 3. Together they help, leave the hair softer. Massage the scalp with these oils at night and leave the oils while going to sleep. In the morning, use a very mild shampoo to wash and rinse thoroughly with plain water.
(Be sure to protect your pillows and sheets during this process)

For oily hair, the sebaceous oil glands produce excessive oil. The oil travels up the hair shaft and the oil will weights down the hair on the scalp which will result in flat looking hair that does not hold a style.

This condition may be genetic, or may be caused by hormonal changes. There are two phases to washing oily hair. During the first phase, shampoo is applied to cleanse the scalp and also removes the oil and dirt stuck to the hair shaft. During first phase, the emphasis is on the scalp. During the second phase, you will need to apply the astringent (sort of like a toner) to the hair and the scalp. During second phase, the emphasis is on the hair stems.

Short hair should be washed every day. Long oily hair should be washed at least every other day. (One day in between hair wash).

The best astringents are alcohol. Vodka, beer, and vinegar all have alcohol. Do NOT use rubbing alcohol. Rubbing alcohol will irritate your scalp and dry your hair out. Start with the weakest solution first then move on to higher amount of alcohol only if needed.

Vodka

Use Vodka as a hair conditioner after the shampoo. Buy 80% proof (40% Alcohol) Vodka. You may buy Citrus flavour vodka. Vodka makes the best hair conditioner for oily hair. You may start with one part vodka to 4 parts water. Adjust the ratio depending on the results

Beer

Use flat beer as a hair conditioner after the shampoo. The brand does not matter. Beer contains alcohol and silica. We need both.

Vinegar

You can use any type of vinegar. Most of the vinegars have about 4% alcohol.

For oily hair, do NOT use any oils to massage your scalp or any other reason

Do NOT use commercial hair conditioners. They contain oils in different forms.

Phase I

Use warm water, and shampoo for oily hair. (You may also create your own shampoo by adding fresh lime juice to shampoo for normal hair.)

Wet your hair with warm water

Apply shampoo to the scalp, the nape, and hairline. Use fingers to actually spread around the entire scalp. Let it sit for 2 minutes.

Wash away the shampoo with warm water.

Re-apply shampoo to the scalp area as well as the hair. Leave the shampoo on for about 5 minutes.

Wash away all the shampoo with warm water, till water runs clear.

Phase II

Use cold water, and the astringent suitable to meet your hair needs.
Step 1: Squeeze out as much water as possible by hand.
Step 2: Apply the hair astringent. Make sure that astringent covers the hair from root to the end of the shaft.
Step 3: Cover your hair with a shower cap. Wait about 5 to 10 minutes. Time depends on the type of hair astringent.
Step 4: Wash away all the hair astringent with cold water, till water runs clear.
